At Copa Airlines we take our Social Responsibilities very seriously and are always looking at ways to make life better for all, in particular those in need.
At one time this event was only a dream for me due to the fact that I lost my father to cancer when I was 19 years old. During his life time, he always portrayed a great empathy for helping those in need, and had always put time, effort, and a great emphasis on promoting education. Thanks to a group of sponsors and volunteers, in 2012 my dream became a reality and we held our first Golf Tournament called ¨Copa Airlines Technical Operations Charity Golf Tournament¨. The event was held at the Tucan Country Club & Golf Resort in Panama City. We were able to raise $75,000 which was divided between ASONAPAQ (National Association for Patients on Chemotherapy) and “Centro de Alcance Positivo por mi Barrio de la 24 de Diciembre”. For the former, we aimed at launchinga feeding program for 25 under privileged cancer patients in Panama. And for the latter, we wanted to support the facility´s improvement. This establishment is an after school center for young kids in social risk within the Tocumen Airport area near Panama City. The funds for this center were used to build a Computer Center for the students.
, With the great support from our sponsors and volunteers, this event was a great success and helped us in assisting those in need. This success led us to take the decision of making this an annual event.
In 2013, we set out again, our 2nd Copa Tech Ops Charity Golf Tournament to support both organizations, raising then the amount of US$150,000thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and volunteers. As a result of the second year event, we increased the number of patients helped thru ASONAPAQ from 25 to 40. For the “Centro de Alcance Positivo por mi Barrio de la 24 de Diciembre” the funds helped building a pre-school at the Center. Additionally, we were able to make a sizeable donation to United Way in order to contribute with the maintenance of all the after school centers called “Centros de Alcances Positivos” in the Republic of Panama.
In 2014 the 3rd annual Golf Tournament was an even more successful event. We were able to raise $203,000, thanks to our great sponsors. The funds were used to purchase a land to build a small sports complex at the “Centro de Alcance Positivo por mi Barrio de la 24 de Diciembre”, and maintaining the feeding program with ASONAPAQ. This year, we also included two new NPO, the first being: “Parroquia de Fátima” located in “El Chorrillo” neighbourhood. This center provides schooling and shelter to about 700 people in various age groups from pre-school to Senior citizen, and the collected funds allowed us to adapt dorms for 25 children affected by domestic violence and whose parents are detained. The second newly supported organization was “NUTREHOGAR”. This organization, created in 1988, is committed to recover and prevent severe malnutrition of children in the poorest communities in the Republic of Panama. This year, the funds collected were usedfor the Christmas party for the kids of the indian community called “GNOBE BUGLE”.
On January 31st, 2015, our 4th annual Golf Tournament was held again at Tucan Country Club & Golf Resort, 2015, and with the support of our previous and new sponsors, we raised $258,000 to continue contributing to the growth of each one of our organizations and the community in Panama City. At “Centro de Alcance Positivo por Mi Barrio de la 24 de Diciembre”, the construction of the new sport complex initiated in September of 2015. In our second NPO, ASONAPAQ maintained the support for 50 underprivileged patients on Cancer treatment. Our third NPO, “Parroquia de Fátima del Chorrillo”, renewed the music classroom for the school and kids who attend their facilities.
On February 19th, 2016, we held our 5th Annual Copa Tech Ops Golf Tournament. Once again thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to rise over $256,000 which contributed greatly to our charities. Thanks to this success, we were able to continue the support of our four main NPO´s, and additionally, we were also able to make certain one off contributions such as for remodeling a school, and assisting an under privileged child with an eye surgery. Our contribution to “Centro de Alcance Positivo por Mi Barrio de la 24 de Diciembre”, was used to continue project for the construction of the small sports complex. For ASONAPAQ, we maintained the support for 50 underprivileged patients on Cancer treatment. For the “Parroquia de Fátima del Chorrillo”, the funds were used to buy musical instruments for the music hall that we helped them build during the prior year. Our contribution to “NUTREHOGAR” gave happiness and joy to more than 1500 children of the indigenous communities.
Our 6th version of the tournament was held on February 15-18th, 2017. Thanks to the support of our sponsors and the commitment of our volunteers we fundraised more than USD$332,000 to help our selected charities, communities and the underprivileged. In “Centro de Alcance Positivo por Mi Barrio de la 24 De Diciembre” the funds were directed to finish the construction of the small sport center. Aditionally, in March 2017, we opened and maintained a year of expenses of a Kindergarten named CEFACEI Cabuyita, which cares for 30 children from 4 to 5 years old. At ASONAPAQ, we kept the feeding programbut then for 60 cancer patients, and supported CLAMOR DEL CORAZON for the Construction of the house for underprivileged kids with special needs We also keep the support for NUTREHOGAR by throwing a Christmas party for more than 2500 children of the indigenous communities. This year, in our 7thr version of the tournament, we raised more than $361,000 to continue the support of the selected charities.
On behalf of the organizing team, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the generosity of our sponsors and volunteers during these 7 years. With their support, we have been able to help over 3.500 children and adults from the Communities of “El Chorrillo”, “Tocumen” “and “Gnobe Bugle”, more than 150 underprivileged cancer patients, provide more than 10,000 lunches, on a monthly basis, for a community in social risk, support kids with special need from all Panama and other unfortunate families.
I am most hopeful and optimistic that we will have another great event in 2019, to support our charitable causes.
